Scene 1: Village of Mattau
時：日 景：山野（麻豆社）
人：伊同、達來、烏野；大巴雅、陳首、麻豆社勇士若干、荷蘭兵若干
莎韻：（幕後唱）我的大地啊…是種子的母親
在你的懷抱中，養育我的族人
我的山林啊…是活潑的生命
彎弓射箭，圍捕狩獵，是我自由的山嶺
SA'UN:
O great earth of mine, mother of all seeds
You nourish my tribe in your embrace
O backwoods of mine, lively as life
The arrow flies, hunters encircle, in the hills of my freedom
〔伊同、達來、烏野與眾勇士在場上；獵捕鹿群
伊同：（唱）日頭沈大江，日頭出東山
樹影搖震動，日照滿山紅
勇士狩獵山中等，樹枝樹藤雙手攀
春天因何寒霜降，順著溪水再向東（過奏）
土地被人強佔領，海邊起造紅毛城
為了保護麻豆社，彎弓射箭來狩獵，勉強也著行！
ITONG:
River sundown, mountain sunrise
Tree-shadows sashay, red rays in the hills
Braves hunting, waiting, climbing by branch and vine
Wherefore spring frost? Heading east by stream's edge
Others took our land, built Fort Redhead by the sea
For Mattau we hunt with bow and with arrow, hard though it be
（白）行！
ITONG:
Let's go!
合唱：（唱）彎弓！射箭！圍捕！狩獵！
深山林內有腳跡，貢獻鹿皮勉強也著行
找到鹿群的蹤影！
ALL:
Draw! Fire! Surround! Attack!
Tracks in the wild, deerskins to pay, no other way
But to track down the herds
伊同：找無自由的山嶺、找無自由的山嶺…
ITONG:
Hills of no freedom, hills of no freedom...
〔伊同放下弓箭，若有所思；群鹿逃走
達來：伊同！剛才明明有機會可以射中那隻鹿，你怎麼都不動手，無彩咱等這麼久…(音樂止)
TALAI:
Itong! What's up with you? You had that deer. You didn't even move. So much for all that waiting.
伊同：（悶悶不樂地）我們村裡也不缺鹿肉，根本就不該來打獵……這是破壞祖先的規矩！
ITONG:
There's plenty of venison in the village. We shouldn't even be hunting today. This is against the code of our people.
達來：到這時你還在想祖先的規矩！紅毛人來收鹿皮的時間卜到了，咱要繳納的鹿皮根本就不夠，你未記頂擺(上次)蕭壟社因為鹿皮不夠，真多人朗奉(都被人)抓去做苦工！
TALAI:
Like this is the time to be hung up on a code. You forget what happened last time Soulang came up short on deerskins for the Redheads? Hard labor all around.
伊同：我當然知影！
ITONG:
Yeah, I know.
烏野：你知影你還放那一群鹿走掉！
UYA:
Yeah, you know? So why'd you let that deer go?
伊同：剛才那一群鹿當中，大隻鹿很少，都是一些小隻鹿，你把大隻鹿殺死，小隻的也會被其他野獸吃掉…小隻鹿若是活不下去，以後咱卜去都位(去哪裡)找鹿皮呢？
ITONG:
Most of that herd wasn't grown. We bring down the grown deer, beasts of prey finish the young. Where does that leave us next time we need deer?
達來：你講的這是咱族內打獵的規矩，我當然知！可是那些紅毛人不知啊！顧眼前卡要緊，我看這些鹿跑未遠，咱還是緊追…
TALAI:
Code of the hunt, I know, I know! But the Redheads sure don't! We've got enough worries for today. C'mon, those deer can't have gotten far, if we hurry...
〔達來等要追捕鹿群，聽到幕後人聲喊叫
陳首：（幕後）圍起來！不通呼走去！不通呼走去…
KAPITAN TAN:
Circle them up! Don't let them get away! Don't let them get away!
〔大巴雅、荷蘭人、陳首上場；一行人把麻豆社勇士包圍住
〔伊同與勇士們拔出刀來
伊同：（持刀）你們這是作什麼？
ITONG:
What do you think you're doing?
陳首：（邊走邊講）將海賊抓起來！朗總(全部)抓起來！
KAPITAN TAN:
Seize the pirates! Seize them all!
大巴雅：大人你看不對了！因是麻豆社的人，不是海賊！
TAPAYA:
I think you're mistaken, Your Honor. They're not pirates, they're from Mattau.
陳首：（看清楚）啊……看不對了！（對雙方）你們大家槍放下、刀也收起來…
KAPITAN TAN:
Hmm... Mistaken, indeed! Alright!
(to both sides)
Let's all put our guns and blades away, then.
〔陳首比手勢要大家放下武器，伊同警戒的持刀不放，荷蘭人的槍也依舊對準麻豆社的人，雙方僵持不下
陳首：咦…（唸）紅毛番都著平地番，這聲有影真正番
這個所在都是我界管，勸恁緊將刀放下
若無得失我、會好著未完全
KAPITAN TAN:
Redhead brutes meet island brutes
All rhyme, no reason, so brutally rude
What I say goes!
Y'all best be cool
I'd lay down my knives if I were you
Or get on my wrong side, if you will
You'll soon regret having left the womb
〔達來拉伊同，要他將刀放下，也叫勇士將刀放下
達來：大人啊！收鹿皮的時間還沒到，恁怎會到山裡來？
TALAI:
Your Honor, the deerskins aren't due yet. What brings you into the hills?
陳首：（唸）為著港邊有海賊，港口圍甲密密密
紅毛大人用大砲將因結果但殺(解決乾淨)
存一寡人走入深山林內，害恁爸找甲嘴鬚打結
恁治這上蓋好、大家緊來鬥出力
KAPITAN TAN:
Pirates put to port, had the harbor hemmed in
The mighty Redheads annihilated them with cannon, but
Some slipped into the wild, now I'm out here sweating it out
Great that you're here, you can help us out
伊同：（冷淡的）我們正在打獵，無時間給你鬥出力！
ITONG:
We're hunting. No time to help you out.
陳首：哎哎…（唸）我講的話你敢拒絕，不驚紅毛城的律法
我是奉命行事你敢移越，稍等抓你去槍決
KAPITAN TAN:
Tsk-tsk..
(chanting)
You dare say me nay?
You fear not the law of Fort Redhead?
I'm acting under orders, so cross me
And I'll pass you on to the firing squad.
大巴野：大人！這一帶瓦近(接近)麻豆社，你就徵調因(他們)出力，我大巴野回去調集新港社的人去另外一面圍捕，相信一定抓得到海賊！
TAPAYA:
Your Honor, we're close to Mattau right now. Draft them and have them help. I'll go back to Sinkan and round up more men to give chase from another front. I'm sure we'll catch the pirates!
陳首：（唸）大巴雅你講按爾上蓋好，擔(語詞)你是聽有也是無
這就是文明教化的結果，無親像你生番番糕糕(無理取鬧)
KAPITAN TAN:
Tapaya sure makes plenty of sense.
How about you others, did you catch that?
Such are the fruits of civilization:
Creatures of reason, not like you raw brutes.
伊同：你講阮是生番？做生番總比做走狗較好！
ITONG:
You're calling us raw brutes? Better to be raw brutes than running dogs.
〔大巴雅憤怒攻擊伊同，伊同還擊，被新港社及麻豆社的人拉住
陳首：你們做什麼……大巴雅你不要亂來，我是要你來保護我、來抓海賊，不是要你來冤家相打！
KAPITAN TAN:
What do you think you're— Cut out the foolishness, Tapaya. You're here to protect me and catch pirates, not get in fights.
〔大巴雅對陳首的話十分顧忌，立即收手
伊同：你果然真聽話，莫怪新港社替因做牛做馬！
ITONG:
Oh, look, he does as he's told. No wonder Sinkan is under yoke.
大巴雅：你！…你毋免講這款話，你既然心內不服、你這麼有本事、來啊！刀拿起來…去將他們殺死！
TAPAYA:
Hey! Save the trash talk. You think you're all that? You don't wanna live in their world? Go ahead, then, pick your blade back up and kill them!
〔大巴雅挑起伊同的刀，二人再度劍拔弩張對峙起來
伊同：你以為我不敢？
ITONG:
You think I'm scared?
〔伊同拿刀面對陳首，陳首迅速躲到荷蘭兵後面，荷蘭兵把槍舉起
〔達來擋到伊同面前，烏野拉住伊同
陳首：（害怕的）大巴雅你……你起肖啊(發瘋了)！你……你哪會要他們殺我…
KAPITAN TAN:
Tapaya, y-you've gone mad! Y-y-you want them to kill me...
大巴雅：（輕視地看伊同一眼）大人你毋免驚，伊不敢對你怎樣…！
TAPAYA:
Never fear, Your Honor. He won't hurt you.
〔烏野死命拉住伊同，達來上前對陳首說好話
達來：是啦大人！這是誤會啦！（暗示伊同）大人恁手上都是拿槍呢！我們哪會黑白來！
TALAI:
That's right, Your Honor! This is just a misunderstanding! All of you have guns, Your Honor. Why would we try to do anything crazy?
〔陳首見他們果然不敢動手，又變得十分囂張
陳首：（唸）給天借膽無簡單！番仔這呢賢罵人(這麼會罵人)！
講話大聲無稀罕，稍等幾粒槍子付恁鼻香(讓你嘗嘗滋味)
KAPITAN TAN:
Foolish courage, I must say I'm impressed
Watch your savage mouth, it's best to know your place
Talk is cheap, you're much like all the rest
We'll serve bullets in a minute if you fancy just a taste
達來：大人不要生氣、不要生氣，阮都答應就是！
TALAI:
Easy now, Your Honor, easy. We'll just do as you said.
陳首：這樣還差不多！大巴雅你先回去！
KAPITAN TAN:
That's more like it! You can head on back, Tapaya.
大巴雅：是！
TAPAYA:
Yes, sir!
〔大巴雅與伊同怒目相對，大巴雅下
烏野：大人啊！阮若是去幫你抓人，鹿皮敢會當(能不能)少繳一點？
UYA:
Your Honor, if we go after the pirates, will you accept less deerskins from us?
陳首：（唸）嘿無諾！一犯一、兩犯兩，樹籽肖想卜換檳榔
不成番仔閣賢打算，兩項朗愛恁擔當
KAPITAN TAN:
Nice try, but...
(in song)
It's like fish and fowl, nuts and betelnuts
This and that, the twain don't ever touch
No-good savages, fishing for shortcuts

達來：（生氣的）你……
TALAI:
What the—
伊同：（拉住達來）既然大人交代我們就照辦，不知要我們作什麼？
ITONG:
No, we'll do as Your Honor says.
(to KAPITAN TAN)
What do you want us to do?
陳首：真簡單！
（唸）深山林內、路草生疏！驚的上山遇著虎
派恁面前取路，互相照顧通招呼
KAPITAN TAN:
Easy!

伊同：既是如此，你們就隨我來！
ITONG:
Got it! Alright. Follow me, then.
〔伊同與勇士疾行、下場，轉眼不見人影
陳首：喂！哪會作恁走！（吩咐荷蘭人）緊行！緊追來去！
KAPITAN TAN:
Hey! Where are you going? Come on, let's catch up!
〔陳首與荷蘭兵跟不上，緊緊在後頭追趕
陳首：喂…等我…稍等咧…不要走這緊！…等我啊…
KAPITAN TAN:
Hey, wait! Hold up! Don't go so fast! Wait for me!
〔一行人來到溪旁，燈轉暗，水波影
達來：前面的溪水湍流…，這要怎麼過？
TALAI:
This stream is pretty fast-moving. How are we all going to get across it?
陳首：這還不簡單…恁你們背這些官長過去！
KAPITAN TAN:
Easy as pie. You guys are going to carry the officers across.
達來：叫阮背因(背他們)？
TALAI:
Wait, you want us to carry them?
陳首：對啊！因不會游水，萬一淹死怎麼辦？（一介）
KAPITAN TAN:
Of course! They can't swim. What if they drown?
伊同：（心中盤算）大人要阮背因過河，那大人你呢？
ITONG:
He wants us to carry them across. What about you, Your Honor?
陳首：我上驚水！我店岸邊等，等一下你們轉來再來接我！
KAPITAN TAN:
Nothing scares me quite like water! I'll just wait here on this side for you all to get back.
〔陳首下
〔伊同等三人背負荷蘭人游水，走到溪中，將荷蘭人溺死
達來：伊同，你這樣做…你忘記岸邊還有一個…
TALAI:
Itong, that was... You know there's another one back on the banks, right?
伊同：不能留下活口！
ITONG:
No survivors allowed!
〔伊同等人下
〔陳首上
陳首：奇怪，我在這裡等半天了，怎麼去那麼久…
KAPITAN TAN:
This is odd. They've been gone for so long.
〔達來、伊同、烏野上場
達來：大人啊…
TALAI:
Your Honor!
陳首：誰叫我？（回頭）
KAPITAN TAN:
Who was that?
〔伊同吹箭射中陳首左目，陳首沒有看清是何人
陳首：唉呀…
KAPITAN TAN:
Aaaargh!
〔音樂起--【占我的土地】前奏
〔陳首下
〔達來查看陳首掉下山谷的地方
達來：伊同！無看到人，可能是跌落山下去了！
TALAI:
I don't see him. Maybe he fell off the cliff!
伊同：（唱）佔我的土地，逼我作買賣
用恁雙手比高低，無命度過溪
ITONG:
Taking my land
Making me a peddling man
Deriding us and acting grand
No luck crossing from sand to sand
達來：伊同！郭懷一頭家一直叫你不通和紅毛人作對，現在死這麼多紅毛人、若是被發現這是卜按怎(這要怎麼辦)？
TALAI:
Mr. Koeh Hoai-it told you not to go up against the Redheads, Itong. Now all those Redheads are dead. What if people find out?
伊同：懷一大哥已經回伊的故鄉去了，伊袂(不會)發現，而且…
ITONG:
Brother Hoai-it went back home. He won't find out. Besides...
烏野：而且什麼？
UYA:
Besides what?
伊同：（唱）林中人蹤罕，春到溪水寒
就說入到深山兩分散，與咱無相干
ITONG:
